Academy moving but NYPD hanging on to Gramercy site
Sources say police officials still figuring out what to do with the building
The New York Police Department does not plan to unload the Police Academy building in Gramercy after the academy relocates to Queens later this year. Instead, the eight-story property at 235 East 20th Street will continue to serve police functions.
Community Board 6 had hoped that a middle school or high school could occupy the space, located near Third Avenue. The NYPD said it will conduct a study on how best to use the facility.
The academy’s move to a new College Point, Queens, site is slated for July. [DNAinfo] — Mark Maurer
