Macy’s CEO mulls major renovation to Brooklyn store

The CEO of Macy’s is considering extensive renovations to The Store On Fulton Street in the Downtown Brooklyn shopping district.

Terry Lundgren, head of the Ohio-based department store chain, said the outlet would be remodeled to cater to young people, higher-income residents and existing customers. Brooklyn Community Board 2’s district manager, Robert Perris, said local leaders have discussed the idea of a Macy’s makeover at 422 Fulton Street in the past, but actual plans have been vague.

“Doing a little here and there — that’s not what Brooklyn needs,” Lundgren told the Wall Street Journal. “What Brooklyn needs is for us to look at the store in its entirety and imagine the future consumers that are coming in and create a response to a newer vision.”

In Manhattan, meanwhile, Macy’s Flagship Store On 34th Street is undergoing a $400 million renovation. The four-year renovation project is slated for completion next year and will add 100,000 square feet of retail space to the store, bringing the total retail space in the store to 1.2 million square feet.
