Carlton House at 21 East 61st Street

The Carlton House is a co-op conversion at 21 East 61st Street. The building, once home to the Helmsey Carlton House hotel, was renovated by developers Angelo, Gordon & Co. and Extell Development, and transformed into a luxury 69-unit residence. The renovation cost a reported $350 million, and Extell President Gary Barnett told The New York Times that “it is actually more expensive than if we tore the damn building down and built it again.” The project hit the market in April 2013, and as of early July, thirteen units remained available, ranging from a $8.6 million three-bedroom to three $65 million properties, a duplex penthouse and two townhouses. The Beyer Blinder Belle-designed white-glove building will have a doorman, an indoor pool, a fitness center and a “dedicated lifestyle consultant” to assist residents with reservations, travel and event planning. Katherine Newman Design handled the interiors. Contact www.thecarltonhouse.com or 212-680-0166.
