Attorney General looks to halt Salvation Army’s building sale

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office is stepping into a fight over whether The Salvation Army can sell a building used for senior housing on the Upper West Side.

The attorney general argued that by selling the 352-unit building at West End Avenue and West 95th Street, some of the city’s most vulnerable residents will be forced out of their homes, violating tenant protection laws, according to Capital New York. The Salvation Army has said it plans to relocate the approximately 190 seniors who live at the Williams Memorial Residences to a new building on East 125th street, according to the website. That new building, however, won’t be completed for a few years.

Schneiderman’s office also questioned the pricing of the building. The Salvation Army is listing the building at 720 West End for $108.8 million. To a residential developer, however, the site can be worth a lot more. [Capital NY] — Claire Moses
