Modified crystal design for Dumbo’s 10 Jay St. gets thumbs up from Landmarks
Triangle Assets, Glacier Global Partners are converting the building to 46 resi units
A bold, sugar crystal-inspired design for a waterfront Dumbo residential conversion won approval today from the Landmarks Preservation Commission, after a slightly different vision for the project was rejected last month.
The former commercial building at 10 Jay Street will undergo a conversion to 46 high-end condo units, according to Joseph Stavrach, president and CEO of Triangle Assets, the owner of the property and a co-developer with Glacier Global Partners.
The new design, which incorporates brick elements along with the glass and steel facade, is meant to evoke the building’s history as a sugar refinery, along with the spirit of Dumbo as a manufacturing hub.
“[Landmarks] gave us very good ideas and we went back and we put the brick element into the facade,” Stavrach said. “We also put a lot of steel to show the stability of Dumbo, the big concrete and steel buildings that Dumbo is all about. Landmarks loved it.”
Amenities will include a pet spa, gym, roof deck, bicycle room, and private gardens for the penthouse unit.
Though Landmarks praised the beauty of ODA New York’s design last month, the commission ultimately decided it needed tweaks to be appropriate for the historic district.
Demolition on the building is expected to begin May 1 and the project is set to be completed by Fall 2016.
