Dean Skelos, the New York Senate Majority Leader, is under investigation by the federal government for possibly taking actions to benefit Abtech, an Arizona-based company that hired his son, as well as Leonard Litwin’s Glenwood Management.

Several subpoenas have been served to Skelos’ Senate colleagues in recent weeks, and evidence is being presented to a grand jury, the New York Times reported.

The investigation by Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, focuses on the hiring of Skelos’ son by Abtech, a company that was also awarded a storm-water treatment contract in Nassau County, where the Skelos family lives.

The investigation also found that several high-ranking Glenwood Management members have done business with Abtech. Bharara is looking into whether Skelos took official action to benefit either Abtech or Glenwood.

The investigation recalls the arrest of the former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver earlier this year. Glenwood surfaced in that corruption case as a beneficiary of 421a tax breaks, though it was not accused of wrongdoing. [NYT] — Tess Hofmann
