Queens developer Bo Jin Zhu plans 11-story Midwood building

Bo Jin Zhu, a developer who has worked with Brooklyn heavyweights Chaim Miller and Joseph Brunner, is planning a 162,000-square-foot building in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Midwood that would house apartments, retail and a synagogue, according to a permit application filed Tuesday with the Department of Buildings.

The 11-story building, located at 1721 East 8th Street in Midwood, would feature 26 residential units across nearly 32,000-square-feet of residential space, according to the filing. But commercial space is slated to be the largest component of the development, with almost 104,000 square feet devoted to retail space and a medical office.

The property would also hold a 27,000-square-foot synagogue, according to the filing, as well as a 75-car attended parking garage. Each of the building’s fifth through 10th floors would house four residential units, with the 11th floor holding two units.

Neither Zhu nor his Z&K Realty Developers LLC could be reached for comment. Chelsea-based Daniel Goldner Architects, the project’s architect of record, did not return a request for comment.

The Queens-based developer, who is originally from mainland China, develops hotel, office and retail space in industrial buildings. Last year, he acquired the Midwood development site for $4.6 million. The developer’s recent projects include a 338,000-square-foot, mixed-use property at 134-53 Maple Avenue in Flushing.

Zhu also acquired a stake last year in a 10-parcel Greenpoint development site valued at $48.5 million, as The Real Deal reported.

Earlier this year, Brooklyn investor Moshe Oratz sued Zhu over a five-story, 60-key hotel in Bushwick, claiming Zhu continued to market the property despite entering contract to sell it to Oratz for $13 million.
