A developer can now begin nsnstruction on an office and retail development in Lincoln Park, a project that has been significantly scaled back following community opposition to the initial plan.

The developer, R.A. Zweig Inc., has been approved to build a two-story development on that site, at 2300 North Clybourn Avenue, public records show. It will have 7,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space and 8,200 square feet of office space on the second floor, Curbed reported.

Original plans called for the construction of a 10-story, 85-unit residential development, which would also include an office and retail portion. A retail development was razed last May in preparation for the new construction. But the developer encountered strong opposition from the community during the effort to rezone the site above the five-story height limit. Opponents argued the taller development would add to congestion around the busy intersection.

The city rejected that plan last year, leading to the smaller development, Curbed reported at the time. [Curbed] — Scott Klocksin
