Mattress Firm will close four stores in Chicago, part of its previously announced plan to shutter 700 stores nationwide.

The Houston-based chain filed for bankruptcy protection last week, announcing it will vacate more than a fifth of its 3,400 locations, including 209 by the end of the month.

Included in the list so far are a total of 29 Illinois storefronts, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Two of the locations in Chicago are on neighboring blocks of Clybourn Avenue near Cortland Street on the North Side — though two others down the street on Clybourn will remain open for now.

Mattress Firm has more than 30 locations in the city. Two additional stores on the Northwest Side will close — 4805 West Irving Park Road and 4840 N Pulaski Road — along with suburban locations.

Mattress Firm said it will make decisions about the additional closures in the next few weeks.

The Chicago-area closures come at a time of struggles for retail landlords in some parts of the market, where vacancies have crept up and rents slipped down recently. [Chicago Tribune] — John O’Brien
