UPDATE, Oct. 9, 2 p.m.: One man was killed and another man injured when a load of steel being lifted by a crane fell and struck them Tuesday morning at an apartment complex construction site in Evanston.

Police said both workers were transported to Evanston Hospital after the 8:25 a.m. accident, according to Evanston Now.

One worker, a man in his 50s from Compton, Illinois, died at the hospital. The other worker, a 28-year-old man from suburban Woodridge, was undergoing surgery after being pinned under the steel. He was listed in serious condition.

Authorities said workers were moving a steel beam from a truck with a crane when the load shifted and came down on them from about 30 feet in the air.

Rescuers had to work to free one of the injured men whose leg was trapped under the debris, police said. They also had to help the crane operator down from a height of about 130 feet.

The accident happened at the site of a nine-story, 241-unit transit-oriented development from CA Ventures and Focus Development at 811 Emerson Street.
