Add Drake to the big names at No. 9 Walton.
October’s Very Own — or OVO — the streetwear brand co-owned by the Canandian superstar rapper and entrepreneur, is opening a 1,200-square-foot store this summer in the condo tower at 9 West Walton Street, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Drake’s store will add even more star power to the luxury building from JDL Development, where the owners roster boasts big names, including hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin, Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, Blackhawks Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, and many prominent local business leaders.
The ground-floor OVO store will join the Walton Street Kitchen + Bar and an Indochino clothing store. It joins other OVO locations in Drake’s native Toronto, along with New York, Los Angeles, London and Vancouver.
CBRE brokers represented both sides in the lease deal: Phil Golding for OVO, and Danny Jacobson, Luke Molloy, Meredith Oliver and Stephen Ansani for JDL.
No. 9 Walton dominated the lists of most expensive resi sales in 2018 after Griffin’s record-breaking buy of the top five floors for $59 million in late 2017.
But the flipping of units has already started. And Drake might have one less Canuck to sing “O Canada” with if he ever visits the store in the building: Winnipeg native Toews is looking to sell his condo for $7.3 million. [Chicago Tribune] — John O’Brien
