Here are Chicago’s top 10 residential sales of 2019

No. 9 Walton holds four spots on the list, including the priciest sale of the year

Despite it being a trying year for luxury home sales, there were some huge sales this year in the residential market.

No. 9 Walton again dominated the list this year with four of the top 10 priciest sales of 2019. JDL Development’s glitzy Gold Coast tower has attracted high-profile, deep-pocketed buyers since sales launched. Two of the units on this year’s list were owned by Blackhawk players Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. In 2017, Chicago hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin purchased the top four floors for $60 million, which is still the priciest residential sale in Chicago history.

Another condo, One Bennett Park, also made a dent in pricey residential sales this year with three units selling for over $6 million each.

The list was compiled using data from Cook County records for sales between Jan. 1 and Dec. 12.

1. 9 West Walton Street, Unit 3100 | $11.3 million
No. 9 Walton certainly made an impression on the luxury market this year. Topping the list of priciest residential sales is this $11.3 million full-floor unit on the 31st floor. The four-bedroom, 7,100-square-foot condo is one of many huge deals to close at the tower this year. The buyer was a shell corporation registered in Delaware.

2. 77 Wentworth Avenue | $9.7 million
This single-family home in Glencoe sold for just under $10 million, a good illustration of the mansion slowdown seen this year. By late August 2018, five properties had sold for more than $10 million. The home was purchased by an anonymous buyer and the property includes 240 feet of shoreline on Lake Michigan.

3. 9 West Walton Street, Unit 3300 | $8.2 million
The second of the four No. 9 Walton properties is a 7,100-square-foot unit with 360-degree views of downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan. It is located on the 33rd floor and sold in October. The buyer was represented by Emily Sachs Wong of @properties.

4. 800 North Michigan Avenue, Unit 5101 | $7 million
This five-bedroom unit on the 51st floor sold in February. The previous owners, Georges and Leila El-Zoghbi purchased a second unit in the building days before selling this unit in the Magnificent Mile high-rise. Justin Penn of Gold Coast Realty Chicago had the listing. Sharon Glickman of Baird & Warner represented the couple.

5. 9 West Walton Street, Unit 2902 | $6.9 million
Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews knows a good investment when he sees it. The center forward flipped a condo he bought at No. 9 Walton, making a $550,000 profit. Toews bought the 4,420-square-unit in September 2018 for $6.45 million and resold it about a year later for $6.95 million. The apartment was on the market for just 48 days before it went under contract to the eventual buyer. Millie Rosenbloom of Baird & Warner was the listing agent.

6. 9 West Walton Street, Unit 2501 | $6.5 million
Toews’ best friend Patrick Kane appears to own this 25th floor unit at No. 9 Walton. The right winger closed on the unit in April, paying about $6.5 million for the 4,776-square-foot unit. The apartment was listed at $5.8 million, suggesting that there were upgrades thrown in by JDL Development. Nancy Tassone was the listing agent and Chezi Rafaeli of Coldwell Banker Residential represented Kane

7. 451 East Grand Avenue, Unit 5709 | $6.4 million
Related Midwest’s Robert A.M. Stern-designed condo tower One Bennett Park also saw a handful of huge sales in 2019. This 5,100-square-foot unit on the 56th floor sold for $6.4 million earlier this year. Related Realty’s Erin Ward represented the seller and Megan Tirpak with @properties represented the buyer.

8. (tie) 451 East Grand Avenue, Unit 6211 | $6.2 million
Another unit in One Bennett Park tower sold for $6.2 million in July. The 4,800-square-foot unit on the 62nd floor was one of three units that topped $6 million in sales this year in the building. This condo included three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms and a study.

9. (tie) 1821 North Howe Street | $6.2 million
This 9,300-square-foot single-family home in Lincoln Park sold in October for $6.2 million. The home included seven bedrooms, eight-and-a-half bathrooms and an elevator to transport residents to its five floors. Kevin Wood of @properties represented the seller, Environs Development and Pamela Rueve of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty represented an anonymous buyer.

10. (tie) 451 East Grand Avenue, Unit 6111 | $6.2 million
Last-but-not-least is the third unit in Related Midwest’s One Bennett Park. This 4,800-square-foot unit has three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Related Realty’s Erin Ward represented the seller and Gwen Farinella, also of Related Realty represented the buyer.
