The home is likely a record in the small northwestern suburb

A South Barrington buyer has plenty of land to explore — and can do it on horseback — after setting a new bar in the northwestern Chicago suburb with a $5 million deal.

The 70-acre equestrian estate at 61 East Palatine Road sold for that price in the first deal in the suburb for more than $4 million in recent years. Few non-farmland residential parcels this large remain in the northwest suburbs, and they rarely hit the market.

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom home was built in 1968. The sale was likely a record in the suburb, where no other homes have sold at that price when property was marketed publicly, according to listing sites.

The private equestrian facilities include groomed standard and event trails, two jump courses, an eight-stall barn, an indoor riding arena with a heated viewing room and tack room. The property also includes two in and out barns with two stalls each.

The 4,600-square-foot home also includes a four-car garage, a library, veranda and billiards room.

The home — and its massive land footprint — is a rarity in South Barrington and the far northwest suburb’s surrounding area. Only one other home is for sale in South Barrington over $4 million: a 14,500-square-foot mansion seeking $6.5 million. There are four homes listed for sale in nearby Barrington and Barrington Hills for over $4 million. This is the first home to sell in South Barrington — and the greater Barrington area around it — for over $4 million since 2020, according to public listings. Previously, the 2017 purchase of a 24,200-square-foot mansion for $4.9 million was South Barrington’s priciest ever, according to published reports. That deal represented a major discount from the $13 million reportedly put into building that home.

Back at 61 East Palatine, Christie Baines and Lisa Bobby with Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty represented the sellers.

One area home has been publicly searching for a buyer longer than most. The mansion featured in the FoxTV series “Empire” is still on the market. It originally sought almost $16 million and is back on the market again after its buyer backed out of a plan to buy it for $9.5 million in July.

The 17,500-square-foot home at 45 Lakeview Lane in Barrington Hills, built in 2008 by owners Sam and Geralyn Cecola, was placed under contract for $9.5 million in April before being listed again a month later, according to a public listing for the property. The 8.3-acre home had also been in contract in September 2021, when it was asking $7.5 million, but that deal also never closed.
