An Elmhurst mansion recently sold at a price that shattered a record for the most expensive home sale ever in the western suburb of Chicago.

The buyers, whose identities have not yet been publicized, paid $4.2 million for the six-bedroom, 9,815-square-foot estate at 217 East South Street, the Chicago Tribune reported

With the deal, Elmhurst’s residential real estate market cracked the $4 million mark. The town’s previous record for priciest home sale was set in November 2021, when a seven-bedroom, 11,100-square-foot mansion in south Elmhurst traded hands for $3.35 million.

It was struck as home sales in other western suburbs have seen their records smashed as of late. In August, Carmela Wallace, mother of the late rapper Juice WRLD, dropped $8 million on a Burr Ridge purchase.

The 217 East South mansion was never officially on the market. The sellers contacted @properties agent Tim Schiller, who served as the listing and buyer’s agent when it last traded for a little over $3 million in 2017, saying they were planning to relocate. Schiller then contacted a family who he thought would be interested in a deal, and sure enough, they desired the property.

T.E. McKenna Builders, which is based in Elmhurst and headed by Tim McKenna, built the 15-room French Normandy-style home in 2007. The firm has built several other luxury homes in the Chicago suburbs.

The buyers weren’t initially in the market to purchase a new home, but were drawn to the property when Schiller inquired about their interest, he said. The agent told the outlet the property is “truly a well-built home by T.E. McKenna, revised for this local Elmhurst family to raise their kids and build their dreams.”

The house sits on a little more than half an acre and has seven-and-a-half bathrooms, four fireplaces and a 4,321-square-foot basement with a full bar, game room, theater and recreation room. Outside there’s a pool, spa and a pool house with an outdoor kitchen and a bar, the outlet said.

The sellers performed a slew of renovations after buying it in 2017. The property’s tax bill came in at $63,963 last year.
