A major overhaul is on deck for an Oak Brook mansion built for Baseball Hall of Fame member Frank Thomas.
Syed Ali, the home’s owner, is completely renovating the 27,400-square-foot mansion at 3312 Midwest Road, the Chicago Tribune reported.
When the former White Sox slugger sold his 3.3-acre estate for just under $8 million in 2003, it was the most expensive home sale in DuPage County. That record stood until last month, when buyers paid a little over $8 million for a five-bedroom, 9,300-square-foot mansion in Naperville.
Thomas spent a little over $8 million to build the house in 1996. It first hit the market at $11 million in 2000.
The property changed hands for much lower prices over the past decade. It traded for $2.71 million in 2014, $2.3 million in 2016 and $4.5 million in 2021 when Ali bought it, the outlet reported.
Ali already redid the exterior, opting for a modern eclectic design. He has plans to transform the interior as well, with Chicago-based Jakl-Brandeis Architects handling the project’s design.
That includes pitched roofs, additional balconies, an expanded second level, a covered entrance and more traditional windows. The property’s gym and outdoor pool will be retained as is.
The mansion features a four-car garage at grade and an underground ramp leading to four more heated garage spaces.
The cost of the renovations wasn’t reported.
Ali, the owner of Shalimar Banquets in Addison, plans to move into the house with his family upon completion in April.
The $8 million Naperville sale could lose its “most-expensive” label, as a 15,800-square-foot Oak Brook estate hit the market at just shy of $12 million in October.
