A new listing in St. Charles is priced to break the western suburb’s record for highest sale of a single-family home of all time, nearly doubling the last record-setting sale made earlier this year.

The market in St. Charles — a western Chicago suburb known for its golf courses and proximity to the Fox River — is heating up as luxury buyers look beyond the city limits in search of more space and tranquility, the home’s listing agent Carrie McCormick of @properties said.

“I’m seeing a big shift with people with larger families wanting to be around family more often in a gathering place, so having a property of this significance and size allows them to do that,” McCormick said.

The 13,500-square-foot mansion, also known as “Stone Wood Manor,” sits at 875 Country Club Road, neighboring the St. Charles Country Club, and is currently listed for $6.95 million, or about $515 per square foot.

The seven-bed, 12-bath home sits on nine acres of land. It was originally built in 1935, but underwent extensive renovations in 2016, McCormick said.

The next-highest listing in St. Charles right now, located on Crane Road, is priced just under $3.4 million. Its price has been reduced by $400,000 since it was first listed in April, according to public listing data.

McCormick represented the sellers of the most recent record-breaking luxury home sale in St. Charles, which closed for $3.6 million in May of this year.

That home, located on Longmeadow Lane, was the priciest single-family home sale in the town’s history, according to MLS data reaching back to the ‘90s provided by McCormick.

Barring any price cuts, the Stone Wood Manor home is set to sell for 93 percent more than that previous record.

The property’s current owners are marketing executives Patrick O’Rahilly, Sr., who is now retired, and Catherine Lang-O’Rahilly, who are husband and wife. They have owned the home since 2015.

About five years ago, the sellers oversaw a full renovation of the home’s kitchen, McCormick said. The home also contains a replica of the bar from the popular Ralph Lauren restaurant on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, as well as a full pickleball court, pool, home theater and quarter mile walking path.

The property is zoned to allow for horses and a membership to the neighboring country club is included in the offering, which McCormick said she has been using as a selling point.

She doesn’t often handle listings in St. Charles, but McCormick said her connections among wealthy Chicago buyers have proven to be helpful to suburban clients as more buyers are willing to consider homes further into surrounding areas.
