A gold-flaked gate and bespoke craftsmanship aren’t just details — they’re part of what propelled a South Shore house to a record $1.44 million sale.
The 1926 Italianate-style home, set on a 10,000-square-foot lot at 6835 South Bennett Avenue, sold to an undisclosed buyer for $291 per square foot, shattering the previous real estate record for Jackson Park Highlands by $500,000, Crain’s reported. Zachary Redden of Redden & McDaniel represented the buyer.
The 5,000-square foot residence features four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and two half-baths, with a primary suite offering heated floors, a clawfoot bathtub, Kohler shower body jets and a steam shower.
The kitchen includes double ovens, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and LED-lit cabinetry. French doors open to a spacious front porch, while LaCantina doors lead to a limestone patio.
Public records show the home was owned by longtime South Shore residents William Van Hoene, a former Exelon executive, and Nikki Zollar, previously CEO of SafeSpeed.
As a landmark district, Jackson Park Highlands imposes strict requirements on renovations. Those standards, coupled with the quality of work, contributed to the home’s record-breaking value, said Jay Butts of Coldwell Banker, who represented the sellers.
“You can’t go putting Home Depot materials in,” he told the outlet.
Listed for $1.65 million in June, the home, situated just minutes from the Obama Presidential Center and Library, sold on Dec. 6 for 87 percent of the asking price.

The sale comes amid heightened concerns about rising property values in South Shore, with 89 percent of voters in a recent advisory referendum supporting measures to prevent displacement due to gentrification.
While the sale highlights the neighborhood’s growing appeal, it also underscores the pressures of rapid real estate development.
