The Chicago Fire is pushing forward with plans for a 25,000-seat soccer stadium at Related Midwest’s Near South Side megadevelopment.
The developer and the Major League Soccer team privately presented a concept for the stadium to Mayor Brandon Johnson and other key city officials recently, Crain’s reported.
The deal hasn’t been finalized, but sources indicate that discussions are progressing with the possibility of Fire owner Joe Mansueto purchasing between 7 and 10 acres at The 78, a 62-acre megadevelopment situated just south of downtown.
A soccer-specific stadium is becoming increasingly urgent for the Fire. Frustration with Soldier Field, which the team shares with the Chicago Bears, has grown over the years. The Fire has often been relegated in terms of scheduling and sponsorship, hindering the team’s ability to grow its fanbase and attract resources.
Building a dedicated soccer stadium would enable the team to control its own schedule, create a more intimate fan experience, and host a range of events throughout the year — far more than what is possible at Soldier Field.
With its lease at Soldier Field expiring this month, the team is actively exploring alternatives, and Related’s South Loop site is emerging as a top contender. The other option on the table is Lincoln Yards, a 53-acre mixed-use development by Sterling Bay.
Related Midwest is planning The 78 as a mix of office, residential and retail. A soccer stadium would require further approvals from city officials.
Some local leaders, including Alderman Pat Dowell, have raised concerns about how the project could impact traffic, pedestrian movement and the surrounding neighborhood.
