Science fiction success didn’t translate to real estate gains for Andy Weir in Chicago’s most-exclusive submarket.
Despite his literary fame and Hollywood projects, the bestselling author of “The Martian” and “Project Hail Mary” recently sold his 13,000-square-foot mansion, at 104 Longmeadow Road in Winnetka, for $3.36 million, Crain’s reported.
The sale, which closed on Dec. 30 for $258 per square foot, represents a 25 percent loss for Weir and his wife, Ashley, who paid $347 per square foot for the residence a year earlier. Linda Martin of Coldwell Banker Realty represented the Weirs. The buyer was not identified.
The home hit the market in July asking $4.9 million, reflecting the couple’s total investment in the property, including extensive renovations. However, after months with no buyers, the Weirs turned to Concierge Auctions to sell the property. Bidding opened on Nov. 15, drawing interest from nine potential buyers.
While the final sale price was one of the highest recorded for a Chicago-area auction, the loss underscores the challenges of navigating the luxury real estate market. Auction specialists note that high-end properties often sell at lower prices during auctions, as many sellers hesitate to accept reduced offers.
Weir explained that his decision to sell was motivated by his burgeoning Hollywood career. Relocating to Los Angeles will place him closer to the industry’s center and support his pursuit of film projects.
The couple’s other Winnetka property, on Indian Hill Road, was listed for just under $5 million in January 2023 but was taken off the market unsold. Initially intended as their main residence, the Weirs ultimately decided to remain there temporarily before committing to their move westward.
Winnetka’s other multi-million dollar home listings include a $35 million lakefront estate owned by a retired Goldman Sachs executive — currently Illinois’ most-expensive listing. Another notable listing is a seven-bedroom estate at 973 Sheridan Road, which is set to hit the market for $16 million.
