An offbeat home sale in Deerfield shows there’s always appetite for a slice of something different.
The suburb’s famous “pie house,” named for its wedge-shaped design, sold for its $350,000 asking price, $55,000 more than it asked two years ago, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The 1,100-square-foot home gained national fame in August 2020 when a TikToker pointed out its triangular design. It has since earned sporadic media attention, including a shout-out from Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show.”
Built in 2003, the home’s unusual shape was a necessity born from its 0.09-acre lot. It initially drew some complaints from neighbors but later became a local curiosity. The house has an unconventional design despite appearing fairly traditional from the front, with its seven windows and a door. A view from the side reveals a wall only 3 feet wide, from which the remaining walls extend outward at an acute angle, like a slice of pie.
It was developed by Greg Weissman, then-owner of Advantage Properties, now a broker for @properties Christie’s International Real Estate in Northbrook. It has finally hit above the $325,000 price point Weissman hoped to sell it for in 2003.
It hit the market in September, finding a buyer just two days later.
The buyer was Tanaka Littlepaige, a manager at the world’s largest derivatives exchange, Chicago-based CME Group, according to county records.
The seller was Abigail Drazner, an operations project manager at insurance and financial services firm Alera Group, who bought the home in 2020. For a few months in 2020 it was listed as a short-term rental, offering free pizza for the first booker.
Ted Pickus and Lisa Schulkin had the listing, and Beth Wexler represented Littlepaige, all agents with @properties Christie’s.
The two-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom house includes 9-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and a paver brick walkway. It also features a storage shed and a parking pad that accommodates up to four cars, though it lacks a garage. The home has one bedroom upstairs and another in the basement.
The property has changed hands multiple times over the years, with the latest sale price comfortably topping its 2021 price of $295,000. Previous sale prices included $300,000 in 2004, $284,500 in 2007, and $260,000 in 2020. Its property taxes for 2023 were $8,014.
