Hockey star Patrick Kane, a longtime mainstay of the Chicago Blackhawks who now plays for the Detroit Red Wings, has sold his Gold Coast condominium for $6.4 million in an off-market deal.
The transaction, finalized in late June, marks another example of prominent athletes exiting the once star-studded tower at 9 West Walton Street in Chicago, based on reports by the Chicago Tribune and Crain’s.
Kane purchased the four-bedroom, 4,776-square-foot condo on the building’s 25th floor in 2019 for $6.46 million, meaning he sold it at a roughly 1 percent loss. The unit was held in a land trust, shielding both Kane and the buyer from direct public association, though the trustee, Jeffrey Zaluda of Kilpatrick Townsend law firm, was named in public records.
On the buyer’s side, Coldwell Banker agent Chezi Rafaeli represented the anonymous land trust. Nancy Tassone of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty represented Kane in the deal.
Kane’s modest loss on the Walton Street unit pales in comparison to the nearly $1 million hit he took on Chicago real estate earlier this year, when he sold a Trump Tower condo for $2.1 million after purchasing it for $3.1 million in 2016. Kane still maintains a $5 million, 5,900-square-foot Greek Revival home in Lake Forest, which he purchased in 2022 shortly before his trade to the New York Rangers.
The 9 West Walton building was once a magnet for pro athletes, but the trend has reversed in recent years. Kane’s former teammate Jonathan Toews, who now plays for the Winnipeg Jets, sold his unit in 2019 for nearly $7 million. Former Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward sold his for $7.2 million in 2020, and ex-Bears linebacker Khalil Mack sold his in 2022 for $6.9 million. Bulls guard Zach LaVine, who bought Mack’s unit, now has it listed for the same price.
Billionaire Ken Griffin also exited the tower. In late 2024 and earlier this year, the Citadel CEO sold the tower’s top four floors — including a rooftop pool deck. The top two floors and pool area were sold to Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and his wife MK Pritzker for $19 million, while the two floors below were sold on the same day in multiple land trust deals totaling nearly $16 million. It’s unclear if the lower two floors that Griffin sold were purchased by the same buyer but the transactions for each closed on the same day with land trusts of similar names.
Kane played for the Blackhawks from 2007 until 2023, leading the club to three Stanley Cup championships. He played in nine NHL All-Star Games. In addition to his Chicago properties, Kane at one time owned a palatial home on the shores of Lake Erie in Hamburg, New York near his native Buffalo. He sold it in 2019 for $2.5 million.
