A Gold Coast home that hides a modern interior behind a vintage limestone facade sold for $6 million on Friday.
Zurich Insurance executive Kristof Terryn and his wife, Kimberly, sold the 7,600-square-foot house at 1438 North Dearborn Street, according to property records. Terryn, who was previously the Swiss insurance firm’s North American CEO, was named CEO for Europe, Middle East and global head of retail in January, according to Zurich’s website.
The Gold Coast home sold at a 13 percent discount from its $6.9 million asking price, according to listing information.
While the facade dates to the 19th century, the home is effectively new construction. The interior was gutted and rebuilt two years ago, the listing shows. Environs Development, a Chicago-based development firm known for luxury speculative and custom homes, led the renovation.
Across four floors, listing photos show the interior now sports an open-concept layout with light plank flooring and floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows, along with a large marble island and sleek white cabinetry in the kitchen. The lower level has a glass-enclosed gym with a sauna and a garage equipped with a car lift for up to three vehicles.
@properties Christie’s International Real Estate Agent Kevin Wood represented the sellers, while Emily Smart LeMire of Compass represented the buyers. Neither returned a request for comment.
Property records that could reveal the buyer’s identity are not yet available.
The Terryns bought the home for $2.7 million in 2021, property records show, before undertaking the major renovations.
Environs has been active in the neighborhood’s high-end development market for years. The firm built and sold the home at 1837 North Howe Street in Lincoln Park for $7.2 million in 2024. Other Environs developments include the $6.8 million sale of a home at 1916 North Howe Street in 2024 and the home at 1920 North Howe, which sold for $5.8 million in 2023.
The Dearborn Street property is the second luxury Gold Coast home to trade for more than $5 million so far this year. Just up the street at 1540 North Dearborn Street, Fred and Bernadette Korndorf sold their similarly refurbished 19th-century home for $5.1 million.
Zurich has been active in the commercial real estate market as well. The insurer signed a 52,000-square-foot lease at Willis Tower in downtown Chicago in November, downsizing from its space at 300 South Riverside Plaza.
