Jim Crown’s Gold Coast condo back on market

Late industrialist’s 12K sf longtime home could test top of Chicago’s condo market

A Gold Coast condo long tied to one of Chicago’s most prominent families is angling for a record-setting sale once more.

The sprawling unit that served as home to the late Jim Crown, who led Henry Crown & Company until his death in 2023, is back on the market for $16 million, according to social media posts from its listing agent, Crain’s first reported. The asking price makes it the priciest condo currently listed in the Chicago area.

The offering follows an earlier attempt to sell the property at $17.5 million, when it hit the market in October 2024 with a different agent. The listing has since shifted to @properties Christie’s International Real Estate’s Emily Sachs Wong, who recently began promoting the home as a “coming soon” exclusive. It’s unclear when the price was reduced or when the new listing agreement began.

If the condo at 65 East Goethe Street trades near its current ask, it would rank among the city’s top condo deals ever, though still shy of the $19 million Gov. JB Pritzker and MK Pritzker paid Ken Griffin for an unfinished penthouse space on Walton Street. Only a handful of Chicago condos have cleared $15 million, including two 2022 deals at the St. Regis and Trump International Hotel & Tower that topped $20 million, according to the publication.

The Crown condo spans roughly 12,000 square feet across portions of the sixth and seventh floors of a Parisian-inspired building, with seven terraces overlooking the lakefront. The unit combines three original developer units and features interiors by the late designer David Easton and architect Eric J. Smith, with formal rooms, ornate plasterwork and a French-style primary suite, according to the listing.

Crown and his widow, Paula Crown, purchased the home in 2002, though the price is not publicly recorded. Amenities include an in-home gym and seven indoor parking spaces.

Paula Crown is selling the home following her husband’s death in a Colorado racing accident on his 70th birthday. The Crown family has long shaped Chicago through philanthropy, with its name attached to institutions across the city, according to the outlet.

Whether the condo fetches anywhere near its asking price could offer a fresh read on demand at the very top of Chicago’s for-sale market, where trophy trades remain scarce and often deeply idiosyncratic.— Eric Weilbacher
