Shannon Abloh, CEO of Virgil Abloh Securities and widow of the late designer Virgil Abloh, sold her Lincoln Park home on Tuesday for $6.1 million.
The sale follows reports of Abloh completing the construction of a new mansion on a four-lot parcel on nearby Orchard Street in March.
The 7,300-square-foot home at 1722 North Burling Street closed on Tuesday for $6.1 million, a deal that appeared on public listing websites on Thursday. It was not publicly listed before closing, indicating the home sold outside the traditional marketplace.
The home was owned by a land trust, but Cook County tax records, as well as past tax records for a home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, indicate Abloh owned the Burling Street home. Records that would indicate the buyer’s identity aren’t yet publicly available.
The limestone facade home on Burling Street features eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms, an elevator covering four stories and a three-car attached garage. It was built in 2017 by Chicago-based Barrett Homes on a 36-foot-wide lot.
Inside, the home has modern finishes with white oak floors and custom millwork, according to the listing. The first floor features a kitchen with a large center island and butler’s pantry, along with living spaces overlooking an outdoor terrace, according to the listing. The primary suite features double-door access to a private balcony and a spa-like bathroom, while the lower level includes a wine room and a home gym, the listing says.
Compass agents Mario Greco and Haakon Knutson represented the seller. Leigh Marcus of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate represented the buyer. Knutson declined to comment. Marcus did not return a request for comment.
Shannon Abloh has led Virgil Abloh Securities following the 2021 death of her husband, and she leads its philanthropic arm, Virgil Abloh Foundation. Virgil Abloh was the artistic director for Louis Vuitton menswear and founded the Off-White label before his death from cancer at age 41.
The pair met in Rockford, Illinois in high school and were married in Chicago in 2009, according to previous reports. Trained as an architect before venturing into fashion, Virgil Abloh received his master’s in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
Listing records show the Burling Street home sold for $4.8 million in 2017, the same year it was built. A land trust managed by the Ablohs took out a $3.5 million mortgage for the purchase in 2017, which was paid off in September 2021, according to property records.
Attempts to reach Shannon Abloh through the Virgil Abloh Foundation didn’t receive a response.
The sale came as a separate, larger project tied to Abloh was recently finished a short walk away. Property records show Abloh spent $9 million for two parcels at 1903 North Orchard Street in 2022, for a quadruple-wide lot totalling more than 11,500 square feet.
Building permits tracked by Chicago Cityscape estimated the costs for the structure and utilities at about $6 million, Crain’s reported. That number only includes structural work and not the costs of interior design.
The newer home, designed by New York and Atlanta-based McAlpine, has a stucco facade with three arched windows and a sheltered entrance facing the street. Chicago-based BGD&C managed construction.
Shannon Abloh also owns a condo at the South Shore Club in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, according to Walworth County records. The Burling Street home previously served as the mailing address on the property’s tax bills. The Ablohs purchased it for $1.3 million in 2019, according to property records.
