Younger baby boomers across the country are buying – and selling – the most homes.

This cohort, of those between 60 and 69 years of age, comprise 26 percent of all homebuyers and 31 percent of sellers, according to a recent report from the National Association of Realtors, an industry group.

Among buyers, that’s two percentage points higher than Gen Xers, who are currently 45 to 59 years old and represent the second-highest-buying demographic group. Gen Xers are tied with older boomers (70 to 78 years old) for the second-highest selling cohort.

These younger boomers are also holding on to their homes the longest – 20 years.

Younger millennials (26 to 34 years) and older millennials (35 to 44 years) – in their prime for getting married and having kids – make up 12 percent and 17 percent, respectively, of buyers. Among the demographic groups, younger millennials made up the highest share of unmarried couples buying homes, at 13 percent.

The demographic least likely to buy or sell a home are Gen Zers, those between 18 and 25 years old who currently comprise just 3 percent of home buyers and 2 percent of sellers across the U.S.
