Compton developer files plans for 46-unit apartment project in MacArthur Park

A Compton sports store owner wants to bring a 46-unit apartment complex to a site between Koreatown and MacArthur Park, according to recent city filings.

Stuart Whang, the owner of Colosseum Athletics, filed plans to build a six-story structure on a one-third-acre lot on the corner of San Marino and Arapahoe Streets, currently occupied by two low-rise apartment buildings. Whang is now trying to sell the property complete with the filed plans for $3.5 million, according to listings on Zillow and Trulia. 

It’s not Whang’s first rodeo. He’s linked to  LLCs developing several projects in area, including a 68-unit project on South Kenmore Street in Koreatown and a 32-unit apartment building on South Union Street in Westlake.

Of the 46 units proposed for his latest project, 11 would be set aside for lower income housing, planning documents show. Parking would be included on the basement level.

Whang acquired the two properties, at 2549-2655 San Marino Street, for just over $2 million in 2015, records show.

Neither Whang nor Sara Hui Lee Tsai, the listing agent for the property, could be reached for comment.
