L.A. is known for its spectacular spec mansions, celeb-brokers and record-shattering deals.
Even this year, as economic uncertainty slowed dealmaking in other markets, L.A. saw a new state record for a $200M home sold to Jay-Z and Beyonce.
But with strikes in the city’s most important industry, a much-hated (and perhaps less-than-effective) transfer tax deadening deals plus economic headwinds, the earth is starting to shake for residential agents. Which brokers can survive? Who’s working right through it? And what can be done to get back onto solid ground?
The Real Deal will ask those questions and more of top luxury agents at our September 21 LA Forum. TRD is bringing some of the most active agents together to find out how to restart L.A.’s luxury market — and how they’re closing deals despite an uphill battle.
Our panelists are among the top brokers, with unique insights into the highest end of one of the most elite markets in the country. Rayni Williams, CEO & Co-Founder of Beverly Hills Estates, sold more than $700 million in real estate with her husband Branden at Hilton & Hyland before going out on their own in 2019 — and last year their group sold a whopping $1.34 billion on the market per TRD’s ranking. And that’s before you count the pocket listings, of course.
Meanwhile, Jason Oppenheim has made a name for himself not only in the world of real estate as the president and founder of Oppenheim Group but as the star of the Netflix reality show “Selling Sunset.” Oppenheim’s not just a shiny face for TV, though – he’s been outspoken about issues facing the industry, like the hole left by First Republic’s collapse and the NAR lawsuit that could reshape commission structures.
And top broker Jade Mills of Coldwell Banker has already started making moves to deal with the market’s turbulence, advising clients on how to sell during Measure ULA. Last year Mills brokered two chart-topping sales in Malibu, including the $100 million sale of a mansion to media mogul Byron Allen and the $70 million sale of another high-end home to Kim Kardashian. And of course, she’s well known for representing the 2016 buyer of the iconic Playboy Mansion.
