A seaside mansion in Malibu occupied by a longtime NHL player is on the market.
Former professional hockey defenseman Chris Chelios has listed his compound overlooking Paradise Cove beach for just under $60 million, Mansion Global reported. The nearly half-acre property at 28026 Sea Lane Drive first hit the market in early 2023 for $75 million. The listing is handled by Carl Gambino and John Bercsi of the Gambino Group at Compass.
Chelios, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, bought the home with his wife,Tracee, in 2003 for $6 million as a vacation home. The property includes a nearly 3,800-square-foot main house with four bedrooms and five bathrooms as well as a beachside guesthouse. The lot has approximately 90 feet of ocean frontage.
The home was originally built in the early 1980s and has undergone renovations since then. The private property is tucked at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac and long gated driveway. Amenities in the three-story house include multiple fireplaces, an outdoor lounge and entertaining deck, an eat-in kitchen and breakfast nook, and a media and game room. The guesthouse comes with a kitchen of its own.
Whether Chelios gets his price remains to be seen as Malibu continues to climb out of the ashes left by the Palisades Fire in January, The seaside city increasingly appears to be a buyer’s market. The City of Malibu has issued a handful of rebuilding permits in comparison to affected areas in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, and many property owners who lost their homes have grown impatient. About 75 lots in Malibu have sold since the fire, but sales are slowing; of the 160 lots in Malibu listed this year that are still on the market, 47 have gotten a price cut.
“Supply is exceeding demand, and lots are selling anywhere from a 20 to 60 percent discount,” local builder Abe Roy told the Los Angeles Times. “That’s a premonition for a freefall.”
This summer, for example, a mansion at 29130 Cliffside Drive sold for $49.8 million, down from the original listing price of $65 million. In August, an estate at 23736 Malibu Colony Road in Malibu Colony sold for $26.8 million after hitting the market in March 2024 for $38.5 million.
