Renters with a few tens of thousands of dollars to spare have the chance to live in their own beachside Barbie Dreamhouse.
Santa Monica’s instantly recognizable pink and purple mansion on Pacific Coast Highway is now available for rent for $38,500 per month, Mansion Global reported.
Howie Nuchow, co-head of sports giant CAA Sports, and his wife Gina Nuchow purchased the home in 2015 for $5.4 million, per public records cited by Mansion Global. The home has been listed for rent several times in recent years, starting at $49,000 a month in 2020 and most recently for $39,500 before it was taken off the rental market last December.
The so-called Barbie House gained notoriety online after the home next door was painted matte black, Kevin Mitchell of Sotheby’s International Realty told Mansion Global. The Barbie House, its dark next-door neighbor and a third house next to that at 1347 Pacific Coast Highway formed a colorful trio known as the “Sherbet Homes” which were built by the same developer in the 1990s, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The first house at 1347 Pacific Coast Highway was painted baby blue and sold in 2007, while the second that was painted seafoam green sold in 2012 and was later painted to its current black color. The pink house is the last to keep its original color.
“They’re not painting it; that’s for sure,” Mitchell said of the Nuchows’ decision not to alter the Barbie House’s exterior. “They’ve definitely embraced it.”
The four-level home was built in 1998 and boasts three bedrooms across 2,822 square feet.
The living room on the main floor has easy access to the public beach of Santa Monica outside. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open into a glass-enclosed patio with unobstructed views of the ocean. The primary suite on the next level above has similar sea views with a seating area and patio overlooking the beach below. A lower level contains another primary suite, and a large roof deck boasts views of the Santa Monica Pier nearby. — Chris Malone Méndez
