The Academy Award-winning writer behind “American Beauty” is looking to unload his over 10-acre Hollywood compound for $21 million, The Real Deal has learned.

Alan Ball, who was also behind HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and “True Blood,” is set to place his property sitting at the bottom of Runyon Canyon on the Multiple Listing Service this week.
The asking price is nearly double the $11.1 million a trust tied to Ball’s business manager paid for the property at 1900 North Vista Street in 2014.
The Agency’s Zach Goldsmith is the listing agent.
The gated property, nicknamed “The Anchor of the Canyon,” has seen its fair share of entertainment industry owners over the decades. Among the property’s other famous owners are nine-time Grammy Award-winner Sheryl Crow and Lou Costello, who was part of the Abbott and Costello comedy duo with Bud Abbott that was popular in the 1940s and 1950s.
The Hollywood property comprises more than 10,000 square feet of residential space across three structures that sit on more than 10 acres. That includes the main house, with the 1924-built Spanish Revival renovated by renowned architect Paul Williams.
It retains several original features, including its Spanish tiles and hand-carved beamed ceilings. Also on the property is a 1909 Craftsman home that’s billed as a guest residence with two levels, in addition to a two-bedroom cottage from the 1880s.
Outside, there are aviaries, greenhouses and private hiking trails.
Within the Hollywood Hills, the sale of 1525 Blue Jay Way in the Bird Streets is so far the area’s priciest deal on record this year, with a $14.8 million closing price, according to a review of Zillow data. That purchase price came out to $2,467 per square foot. It also reflected a 55 percent premium over what the home last sold for in September, which was $9.5 million.
