The story so far:
Two downstate casino proposals were unanimously approved by committees today.
The futures of both the MGM Empire City in Yonkers and the Queens Aqueduct Casino, operated by Resorts World (owned by the Malaysian holding company Genting), were decided by local community advisory boards. They are now well-placed to receive the three downstate casino licenses available.
The next step is approval from the state gaming commission.
MGM has proposed a $2.3 billion expansion of its current facility in Yonkers, with a 5,000-seat entertainment venue and new restaurants. The company has also pledged investments in Yonkers’ public infrastructure. Yonkers City Council has approved necessary zoning changes and the mayor is supportive.
The committee approved MGM’s proposal this morning.
Genting, meanwhile, is proposing a $5.5 billion expansion of its current Resorts World facility in Jamaica. The result would add gaming space, 2,000 hotel rooms and an entertainment center. The company has committed to invest in 50,000 workforce housing units citywide. The Genting proposal has strong support from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, who sits on the committee.
And it too was approved in unanimous vote.
