Maybe he’s trying to generate a little cash toward the $600 million he agreed to pay for a new stadium next to the existing Shea Stadium.

New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon recently sold his 26th-floor condo in the Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue near St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The two-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath went for $2.25 million, according to media reports. Along with his ownership of the ever-struggling Mets, Wilpon is also the co-founder and chairman of real estate firm Sterling Equities as well as the chairman of the Brooklyn Baseball Company, owner of the minor league Brooklyn Cyclones.

Wilpon and his wife, Judith, bought the 1,800-square-foot condo in 1998 for $1.16 million and used it as a home away from home: Their main residence is in Long Island’s tony Locust Valley.
