After city building and fire officials evacuated hundreds residing at the Villas of Lauderhill rental complex Monday, saying that the buildings were unsafe, city officials yesterday promised to give each household $500 and offer additional relocation assistance. A recent city inspection of the complex revealed exposed wires, unstable staircases, and damaged roofs, among other violations. The city will be lending 75 storage units to the departing residents, and will pay them $40 towards the cost of moving the unit. It will also recommend alternative housing in Broward for the displaced tenants of the 26-building complex, and help them to get a deal and expedited application process at some other rental projects.
