Postal Service building new sorting facility

Work has begun on a 500,000-square-foot distribution center for the U.S. Postal Service at the Opa-Locka Executive Airport.

The Postal Service signed a 42-year ground sublease for the 30-acre site at AVE LLC’s Aviation and Commerce Center. The mixed use business park is on 178 acres at the western edge of the airport. The master plan calls for construction of 2.6 million square feet of space for a variety of retail, office and warehouse uses.

A team from Akerman Senterfitt’s real estate practice renegotiated the exisiting public-private contract with Miami-Dade County on behalf of AVE. Attorneys Sue Zabloudil, Augusto Maxwell and Dana Clayton also worked with the county in implementing land use changes and guiding the project through the required municipal, state and federal approvals.

When completed, the Postal Service facility will be the site for sorting all mail coming into South Florida and is expected to create 400 jobs.
