Beleaguered Seattle-based bank Washington Mutual will close its 175-person operations center in Boca Raton by the end of the year. The bank has laid off 1,200 workers nationally as it reels from huge loan losses. Its stock has plunged 85 percent in the last year; it lost more than $1.1 billion in the first quarter of 2008 alone.
