A 16-member task force in Broward County recommends public service campaigns to advise homeowners about ways to prevent foreclosure, as well as additional financial assistance to stave off default. The task force — which includes representatives of local government, nonprofit groups, banking, the court system and the legal industry — issued its report Tuesday after a four-month study. Florida ranked second in the nation last year in the number of foreclosures. Officials say foreclosures in Broward skyrocketed to 14,079 last year from 1,127 in 2005, according to court records. In the first five months of 2008, 13,944 court cases were filed to begin a foreclosure.
