The $1 billion refurbishment of the hotel icon designed by Miami art deco legend Morris Lapidus is going down to the smallest details, even redoing the way toilet paper is left arranged when a new guest arrives at a renovated room. New management is trying to breathe life into the 1954-vintage former Hilton and compete with current luxury hotel offerings. Its main building has been closed for renovation since 2006. Another Fontainebleau is under construction in Las Vegas and owners plan one for Dubai.
