Census data shows that populations in 26 of Broward County’s 31 municipalities had population declines from 2006 to 2007. Hollywood, Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines were among the top 10 fastest-shrinking large cities, according to U.S. census estimates. Broward had the biggest population loss of any Florida County, with 13,154 more people leaving than arriving. In addition to people relocating amid the lagging economy and foreclosure spike, the drop was due to a combination of immigrants starting out in South Florida, as well as baby boomers who are retiring to cheaper places in Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia. House prices for young families were also a deterrent.
