Hotel homes face tax trouble

Palm Beach County officials are seeking ways to better enforce the bed tax revenue they believe home and condo owners are dodging when they rent their properties to short-term guests. They are legally required to add 5 percent to the bill for stays of less than six months, but officials worry that these ad hoc hoteliers either don’t know about the tax or simply aren’t paying. That tax revenue helps pay for the county’s cultural council, sport commission, film and television commission and convention and visitors bureau, all of which face budget cuts given the recent dip in tourism and corresponding drop in tourist tax dollars. The county plans a campaign to educate homeowners to the tax and help enforce it.
