Miami Beach city officials are considering connecting West Avenue between 17th Street and Dade Boulevard by a bridge that would span the canal. It’s envisaged as a north-south alternate to congested Alton Road in the increasingly crowded Sunset Harbour neighborhood. A 550-space parking garage with retail space and a 50,000-square-foot Fresh Market grocery store are both planned for the area. The Miami Beach Housing Authority owns the 9.1 acre empty lot on which the bridge would be built.
