Mass-market builders turn to custom homes

Many big home builders are finding it more profitable to customize homes. Not only are they more lucrative, there’s less risk when the buyer is already found. Consumers can pay less than they would for a custom home built by a smaller developer. Two types of custom homes are emerging: those built to an owner’s exact specifications, and homes that evolved from a builder’s original plans.
