Local residents say Broward County has been developed to death and are objecting to a plan to clear trees and wetland from a 43-acre area in Coconut Creek slated to become a shopping center. Critics of the project are circulating a petition against the Cocomar Plaza at Atlantic Boulevard and Lyons Road. Jacksonville developer Regency Center needs a rezoning to build a 171,000-square-foot Lowe’s and a 98,000-square-foot Kohl’s department store. The plan says about a half-acre of wetlands would be filled in, but developers say they would mitigate the damage by spending an estimated $90,000 placing native plants on almost three-fourths of an acre of wetlands.
