Researchers from Florida International University, the University of Florida and Clemson University continue to stand in the path of storms this hurricane season, collecting data on how high winds do their damage to buildings. Wind research is big — FIU alone has attracted more than $18 million for research. The University of Florida has received a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation and Florida’s Department of Community Affairs. A research group backed by the insurance industry wants to set up a $25 million research and testing center. Stephen Leatherman, head of the FIU International Hurricane Research Center, says this research will help advance storm-resistant home construction.
