Coconut Grove merchants and politicians want to revive the district’s shopping and commercial status, and remain frustrated that Brickell and Coral Gables are stealing the spotlight. Liliana Dones, president of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce and member of the Coconut Grove Village Council, said the market needs to be consistent and new businesses can use all the help they can get. David Collins, executive director of the Coconut Grove Business Improvement Committee, a city-funded group formed in 2004 with the intent help transition the area a now-proposed business improvement district, says many businesses falter because their owners lack experience and a long-term determination. Coconut Grove has two open-air malls, CocoWalk and Streets of Mayfair.
