Barrier island hotel makes waves
The Cortez Hotel, narrowly rejected in July by Fort Lauderdale’s planning and zoning board, will be subjected to a city commission vote this week. Don Fischer, vice president of planning and development for the project’s developer, Florida Estate Home Builders LLC, wants to replace a small three-story apartment building with the 17-story, 154-room moderately priced hotel. Fischer said the company is still negotiating with chains, and the hotel could be a Holiday Inn. The 200-foot-tall hotel would rise between two relatively new towers, the Las Olas Beach Club condo to the east, and Jackson Tower across Seabreeze Boulevard to the west. Residents at Las Olas Beach Club oppose the plan.
