BankUnited Financial founder Alfred Camner stepped down Monday as chairman and chief executive of the largest banking institution based in Florida. President Ramiro Ortiz, who has been at the bank since 2002, was named new chief executive. BankUnited last month was obliged to accept strong federal regulatory action and accept that it was in an unsatisfactory financial condition because of rising bad loans stemming in part from its foray into risky exotic mortgages after a ruling by the Office of Thrift Supervision.
