Mortgage fraud has risen as desperate homeowners avail themselves of
phony remedies that compound the damage. Florida has held the top spot for mortgage fraud in the
nation since 2006, according to the FBI. Shawn Boehringer, advocacy
director for the Legal Aid Society of Broward, said calls related to
foreclosure rescue abuses have spiked in the past 18 months. Overall,
the agency’s foreclosure unit now fields as many as 200 calls a week,
Boehringer said, compared with an average of 50 before the housing
downturn began in 2006.
