Developers building underground parking garages

Developers in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton are responding
to height restrictions and high land prices by building large
underground parking garages. Developers say by building the garages
below grade, they can build prettier complexes and save
above-ground space for condos, office space or stores, getting back
some of the
initial cost of the land. But construction of underground garages is difficult
because water is so
close to the surface. In Miami, a two-level, 7-acre underground garage
was just
completed under the Downtown Dadeland mixed-use complex.
