Layoffs for building department

Palm Beach County, which pays its building department through permit
revenues, has had to lay off 28 employees and eliminate two vacant
positions because of decreased activity. Deputy County Administrator
Verdenia Baker said the steep decline in building permits issued by the
county prevents the department from self-financing at current staff
levels. This is the second round of layoffs, she said.
