A proposed state senate bill would change the procedure for approving
government spending for professional sports teams. If approved, the
bill would require all government spending for sports teams to go
through a public vote, effective July 1. If the local government and
the Florida Marlins don’t finalize their plans for the new Marlins
stadium before the bill is passed, Miami-Dade voters could get a chance
to give their input on the $515 million plan, of which the county is set to pay $347 million.
